How to make diseases disappear, TED Talk by Dr Rangan Chatterjee

I am always excited when I hear medical professionals stepping out of the usual “disease treatment” into “disease prevention” and acknowledging the fact that nutrition plays key part in not only treating but eradicating certain, if not most, diseases.

Even doctors in the 1940s knew this and somehow mainstream medicine nowadays still decided to choose a path of treating diseases with medications without enough emphasis or effort on the prevention side.

Dr Rangan Chatterjee talks very passionately about it in this video in his TED Talk in Liverpool.

What excites me personally is that it is also very much aligned with my beliefs in nutrition on a cellular level and the fact that in order to be healthy we need to focus not on body just meeting recommended daily amount of nutrients that merely perhaps just prevent some diseases, but the fact that we need to take it to the next level and achieve optimum nutrition to build our immunity and give body enough ammunition to be healthy and immune to most lifestyle diseases.

Optimum nutrition consists of giving the body what it needs in the right quantity and balance too.

We are already, and by we I mean Herbalife Nutrition, and have been for some time, personalizing protein levels and there is also drive to innovate and customize all the nutrient levels in the future.

Much of our scientific endeavour is focused on areas like the micro-biome, Dr Chatterjee mentions it in this video.

You give your health a true fighting chance when nutritional levels are balanced and optimised.

I am excited to see even more mainstream doctors aligned with this message as times move on… Enjoy the video!

Breadless Sandwiches are the way forward…

So, why go through a whole trouble of replacing food staple such as bread and putting, instead, grilled sliced aubergines or courgettes instead? Simple, bread makes me bloated, as it does quite a few people I know. Also, 1 slice of bread happens to be the recommended Government serving of carbs per mal, so, two slices needed for a sandwich just makes the whole meal go out of balance. Yes, even if you use wholemeal/ whole grain (and I hope you doo)… You see, any excess carbs will be stored as fat and anything more than one single slice will pretty much put majority of people in exactly that kind of scenario and we do not want that.

So, finding a way to enjoy sandwiches whilst being pretty smart about it, is quite cool and, as I found, even more delicious. Breadless sandwiches are a great way to enjoy your light dinner or lunch with a difference. Grilled aubergines and courgettes filled with egg omelette, tomato, spinach and feta cheese, are above pictured. I sometimes even put grilled chicken and vegetables. Absolutely delightful, balanced and delicious with added fibre and nutrients.

Alternatively, have an open sandwich, like the one pictured below. My option for that is usually rye bread. Or to avoid highly processed what bread – use spelt bread… still one slice if you want your meal well-balanced. I wont apologise for this advice, you may actually thank me for it 🙂 as it may revolutionise your weight management efforts. You are welcome.

Enjoy!

Formula 1 Healthy Breakfast with a creative difference

When people ask me how can I have the same breakfast every single i.e. our Formula 1 shake, I look at them not sure what they mean. obviously, I keep forgetting that people who ask don’t probably know much about Formula 1 (otherwise they would not be asking this question). Of course, I will put aside the fact that their own breakfasts of toasts and cereals is probably what THEY have every day, but, no, I will not go there! (Unless they want me to! LOL)

So, this post is a collection of creations of my breakfasts that all include Formula 1 Healthy Meal just to showcase rather interesting notion that, apart from doing the right thing for the body and giving it all the nutrients it needs every single day, this thing is not just delicious (delicious enough for my boys to love it from since they were tiny for their breakfast, snack and drink before bed time), but they are so versatile – I can go though several months without having the same shake… well, below are whole month worth of them…

Egg and Vegetable Salad

If someone told you “egg and vegetable salad” I don’t think you would be able to picture that it can actually taste as well as look good. This is one of the salads I made over the summer and, as I love all the vegetables on there (sprinkled a bit with some salt and pepper and a little helping of olive oil) and included one whole egg and two egg whites (so that I get decent amount of protein that main meal should have) – it was absolutely delicious, it has an insane amount of fibre combined with decent amount of protein, which makes it a simple, delicious and yet clean and balanced meal that will stabilise your blood sugars, keep you fuller for longer and really make you feel good about the choices you are making.

Bon Apetit!

Quorn Mince Egg Omelette

I have really enjoyed this lunch earlier today and I think you would too.

When I need something quick and delicious for lunch or dinner, if I am not planning to having a Formula 1 smoothie, I straight away turn to eggs. I love them in all kinds of ways, they are nutritious and full of protein.

I have never used quorn before until I recently tried quorn sausages, but I was disappointed with how little protein quorn sausages had compared to some other vegetarian options, however, I could see that Quorn mince has got quite a decent amount so decided to give quorn mince a try, in my seemingly never-ending efforts to find more vegetarian options in my diet.

Jenni’s Story

Jenni’s Story: Feeling better in my 50s than I did in my 30s

Jenni has been my client for 6 months now and it was one of those moments when she first came to CobraFIT initially that I felt instant connection that I usually feel with people who are just open, kind individuals.

You just have to love Jenni. Whenever there is a new participant at CobraFIT, I know Jenni will immediately try to give them some tips and advice, be kind, tell them how good the plan is working for her and make them at ease. I am so grateful to have Jenni as part of our community, such an invaluable member and now very dear friend too. Here is Jenni’s story to date…

“I met Sanela as I had signed up for her Cobrafit workout.  My journey back to health, up to that point, had been slow to get off the ground and I was looking for a weight training style of workout to compliment my other excercise.

I had been very unwell with dreadful gynecological problems and severe IBS for over 10 years. I had not been able to take the time out of my children’s lives to have the Hysterectomy I badly needed, but 2 years ago I was so ill that I had to have the op…..whether I had time for it or not!

Because of the increasing pain and the lack of energy during that time I had been slowly putting on weight and then after the op I had to recover over the period of a year or so.  Last October, I began exercise for the first time in years. I chose Zumba and I was really enjoying it but it wasn’t enough. So, as I said before, in May this year I found Sanela and her Cobrafit.

I was also at the time really struggling with my diet as I had dislocated my Jaw!! I did the first class and afterwards I spoke with Sanela and she suggested we get together to speak about nutrition. I was sceptical at first. I’m pretty clued up about nutrition and thought I wouldn’t learn anything new…

But, I had nothing to lose. I had  to admit I actually wasn’t doing so well on my own so I agreed to meet up the following day.

After some pretty stark revelations on my body composition and metabolic age I agreed to give the ‘5 day eat clean challenge’ a try. After the 5 days I was convinced and converted, had more energy and was feeling brighter and more able to tackle the challenges of life! I hadn’t really been overeating, I missed so many meals, but I was clearly doing something very wrong.

I have struggled with food all my life. IBS has dogged me since childhood and on top of that I suffered eating disorders through my teenage years. This had seriously damaged my metabolism.

I am still struggling a little with my IBS to some degree, as I find lots of things upset me. I am working on finding the best combo. However the shakes and the Herbalife supplements are brilliant because it means I don’t have to think about food or worry that I’m getting the right balance of nutrients or what I’m going to have for breakfast and lunch,  Plus including more soya in my diet had an unexpected benefit, as my hot flushes and some of the other pre menopausal symptoms I’ve been having have miraculously stopped and I’ve been able to stop my HRT!

I have lost quite a bit of weight and dropped a couple of dress sizes, changed shape and am getting pretty fit. More than all if that though I have found a wonderful friend in Sanela. She’s helped me work through the problems along the way and together we are gradually unpicking years of damage. She is so positive and I really value her knowledge and am so glad we met.

The group support we share is also great. It helps to be accountable to the group and also acts like a confessional if we’ve made a mess of things. I am committed to using this way of eating as a life long choice and see no reason not to continue into my late middle age and beyond. I’m 53 now and feel better than I did at 30. Thank you Sanela. Xx”

Thank you so much, Jenni, you are simply amazing and I am so grateful to have you as a part of both our Eat Clean Community as well as CobraFIT, but, above all, as a friend.

When I asked Jenni to write few words, I had to mention that we need to be careful about making any medical claims as our products do not cure anything, they are just great nutrition and body responds well when it gets what it needs, but it is all individual and no result is typical as there are many other factors at play. She did a great job at conveying that message. Thank YOU.

My mother, my inspiration

My parents have been my inspiration throughout my life, each of them for different reasons…

My father died when I was 19 from lung cancer and I grew up feeling that he was destroying his life with smoking and an unhealthy life in general. My mother, on the other hand, whilst having gone through breast cancer treatment herself, has always been very aware of the power of nutrition, has always taken care of her health…

She made nutritious concoctions using plants and herbs, sought after ancient health recipes, even drank raw quail eggs daily to recover after her breast cancer treatment (I only discovered as an adult that they are full of anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fats), amongst other things. I am talking Bosnia & Herzegovina, in 1970s… Not modern Britain… 🙂

My 43rd bites the dust …

This week I celebrated my 43rd birthday! October has most definitely always been my favourite of all months and having my birth date in October I find rather special. This year I spent most of my birthday on my own, apart from being treated to a lovely massage in the morning and a great, fun evening with family over cake and champagne and, in between, literally hundreds of Happy Birthday messages.

Being on my own, however, was just what I needed and almost my own gift to myself, long walk through town, treating myself to a lovely meal, as well as a long bath at home that I generally never have time for as well as it being an opportunity to reflect on my life and work and these few but short hours of solitude is probably the best gift anyone could have given me.
